No More Magic

That Old Black Magic African-American gift and bookstore on Mamaroneck Avenue is closing its doors.

Donna Chambers, owner of the store, which has been in White Plains since 1990, said she decided to close after thinking about it for some time.

“I’ve been tossing it around for last six months to myself,” Chambers said. “It was very difficult decision to make. When you take that little dream and make it work, it’s hard to let it go.”

Chambers said in a telephone interview that closing the store was a “business decision.”

“Over last few years, business had just slowed down to a screeching halt. Christmas’s haven’t been as lively as they had been.”

Chambers, who is also a goldsmith that manufactures gold and pearl jewelry that is sold to stores all over the country, said the store would close “in early July or it might be at the end of June.”

“We’re having a liquidation sale as we speak. I’m very saddened to have to go and leave the community. The community is very sad that we’re leaving, but I think it’s a good business decision. My jewelry business lives on and you can view my products online at www.donnachambersdesigns.com.”
