Don't tread on me

April 20, 2007

Buffalo’s already lackluster tourism industry may take even more of a hit in the near future.

According to the Associated Press, the Seneca Indian Nation in western New York rescinded a 1954 resolution between the tribe and the state that provided an easement on 300 acres of land about 25 miles south of Buffalo that allowed part of the New York Thruway to get built.

Seenca President Maurice John told The AP the decision had nothing to do Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s plan to collect sales tax on cigarettes sold by reservation retailers to non-Indian customers. That might be so, but nonetheless, the timing is conspicuous.

Some of you may remember when the Senecas famously tried to block a portion of the Thruway with tire burnings in 1997, the last time the state tried to collect tobacco taxes from reservations.

So until the state and the Senecas settle this dispute, you may want to consider flying or taking the train to those business meetings in Buffalo.
